My intention for this Thanksgiving post was to post a list of things that I am thankful for…but I felt that wasn’t enough. My next thought was that I would research Thanksgiving and post about my findings…but you can find that elsewhere online. Then, I had it set that I would write about being thankful and tell all of you to go out and thank someone today (which I still might do)…but even that didn’t seem like enough. So I opened up my computer and I typed the word ‘Thanksgiving’. I looked at the word and pondered the word and that’s when it hit me…thanksgiving isn’t just about giving thanks! What happened to the giving in Thanksgiving?
What I’m about to talk about goes very well with my last post: The Spirit of Giving. If you haven’t read that post, please do so now and then come back and finish reading this!
“Who expressed any ‘giving’ this month?”
Now, I want you all to break down the word Thanksgiving. Don’t strain your brains too much, I just want you to break it in half. First, there’s ‘thanks’ and then there’s ‘giving’. All month long I have seen posts on Facebook every day about what you’re thankful for. Everyone is thankful for a lot of things and that’s great…but what about that last part of the word. Who expressed any ‘giving’ this month? Who even gave anything this month? You never see posts about that! And yes…I’m guilty…I didn’t do much giving this month either because with Christmas coming up I’ve been saving all of the giving for that…but what if it’s not about that? What if Thanksgiving is about so much more than we ever thought?!
I know that some of you will say ‘Well, we GIVE thanks so that’s where the giving comes in.’ Well I don’t really think so. That’s not enough for me. Think about it…we are supposed to be ‘giving’ thanks to God for what we have and what he has given us…but if you ‘give thanks’ to everyone else (which most people do) doesn’t that make you boastful? That’s not being humble and Christ-like like He wants us to be. We need to THANK God for everything we have, but maybe we’re supposed GIVE to our neighbor, not boast about what we’re thankful for.
I wish that I had thought of this sooner so that I could have started a new revolution of ‘giving’ posts on Facebook the whole month of November…but there’s always next year for that. Instead, I want you all to think about what you’re thankful for and what you have given, not through this month but on this day, Thanksgiving.
Being Christ-like means being selfless, humble, kind and full of love. This Thanksgiving, think about being more Christ-like and most importantly being thankful and GIVING. Pray to Him about what you’re thankful for and then give to your neighbor or someone in need. You can give many things this year, even if it’s as simple as giving someone a smile, you just have to DO IT!
I will come back and report what I gave…please do the same in the comments below! I would love to see everyone’s response!
