As you all should know by now…I’m pregnant! If you missed our pregnancy announcement, go to We’re Pregnant! to read all about it! I wanted to take the time to give an overview of my first trimester and how it went. From now on I am going to post weekly or monthly updates (as long as I am feeling up to it). Without further ado…here’s “Pregnancy: First Trimester Overview”.
I am 2 weeks late and I have not been feeling well the past week. It’s hard to eat in the mornings and I feel very tired. Emilio is on the National Creek Complex fire and knows that it’s a possibility that I am pregnant. He asked me to wait until he is home to take a pregnancy test but I’m not sure I can wait that long…I really want to know if I am actually pregnant or if I am sick (I have Chronic/Pressure Urticaria). I picked up a pregnancy test the other day but I have not taken it yet.
I talked to my friend, Marissa, today and asked her how she knew that she was pregnant. She then talked me into finally taking a pregnancy test to find out for sure if I’m pregnant or not. Guess what?! The pregnancy test was positive, of course! I already knew that it would be…just had to make sure!
I was supposed to start a workout program this week but I haven’t been feeling well and I found out that I had to take a camp crew to Washington and would be gone for 2 days. On my way up there I had McDonalds for breakfast and for some reason the Orange Juice tasted DELICIOUS! I felt better that day than I had in a long time and I am still feeling a lot better as I write this. I think there was definitely something in that OJ that my body needed!
As long as everything goes according to plan, Emilio should be home next Tuesday so I have made a doctors appointment for Wednesday morning. I have decided to see a midwife at a local Women & Family Clinic. There are 2 midwives that are sharing patients and Emilio’s aunt felt that this was the best choice for me because they aren’t really busy and they can spend more time with me, which is good since it’s my first pregnancy.
Emilio is finally home for a few days and we went to the doctor! Aside from the many tests, the appointment went great! We have our first ultrasound next week to make sure I am not farther along then we think and Emilio already wants to buy a million things for the new addition to our family. We went shopping and my feet got swollen quicker than normal (again, I have Chronic/Pressure Urticaria so getting welts on my feet is very common for me). Other than that, everything is going pretty well right now.
Gas…gas…and more…gas! Everyone tells me that constipation, headaches, fatigue, and morning sickness are normal during pregnancy…but no one warned me about the gas! I’m glad that I am home alone at night so I don’t offend anyone. Every night, no fail, I get HORRIBLE gas! As far as other symptoms, I’ve noticed that if I get hungry it is very hard for me to eat so I have to eat little meals throughout the day to prevent this. I also have not experienced any constipation yet and haven’t had any headaches either. I do have abnormal fatigue though…I have been sleeping 8-9 hours every night and still take 2-3 naps during the day!
I had the first ultrasound this week! Emilio is on the Okanogan Complex fire in Washington so my friend, Miranda, went with me to the appointment. We are NOT having twins (YAY!!!) and the baby is about an inch long, which confirms that I am 9 weeks along. We could not hear the heartbeat but she said it was about 163, which is very good. The baby looks like a little lego man right now…big head, little arms, legs together. I also got my blood drawn today because they did not do that at the last appointment. Can I just say how much I HATE needles?! They hurt…and I hate them! They also put a ton of ultrasound gel on…I felt like I wiped it all off and I still kept finding more! It was very awesome to see the baby…but that gel was a pain!
I haven’t been craving anything specifically but I have noticed that some foods do not taste as good as they used to and others taste better! Pizza does not taste nearly as good as I remember and Chinese Chow Mein tastes AMAZING! I wouldn’t consider it a craving…but it’s definitely DELICIOUS!
This week has gone by very quickly! I’m in Washington to do candy machines next week and I picked Emilio up so that he wouldn’t have to travel all the way home and then all the way back to Washington (he’s helping me with candy machines this time). Of course we did a little shopping and found 2 Baby Seahawks Jerseys (1 in white, 1 in blue). When we saw them we just HAD to get them! This baby better be a Seahawks fan since that is the first thing we have bought for the baby!
This has been a horrid week! Monday & Tuesday went fairly well doing candy machines. I felt slightly sick for about a half hour on Monday, but otherwise I felt pretty good. Tuesday night my feet were swollen and the backs of my legs got hives/welts from sitting in the chair and playing games with my family. My knee also swelled from leaning it on the edge of the table at times. We went to bed late and woke up semi-early to leave and do the last day of candy machines.
I woke up and realized the hives/welts on my legs had spread towards the front, my feet were still swollen, and my hands were swollen! (I’ve never woken up with my hands swollen, they always get hives/welts during the day and at times I will go to bed like that but I’ve never woken up with hives/welts on them). I put Peppermint Oil on my hives/welts to help calm them down and was tempted to rest that day and go home Thursday but I really wanted to get home so we packed up and started the long journey (doing more candy machines along the way).
I was VERY thankful that Emilio was there to help me do the candy machines that day because I was moving very slow and my hands hurt so bad that I couldn’t grab much (including the steering wheel…so he had to drive). I definitely could not have done it without him!
That night I could not sleep very well and woke up several times during the night to scratch my legs and hands. I took Tylenol at 4 AM and went back to bed for an hour, just to wake up to the terrible itch again. My head started to itch too because I was getting hives/welts there as well. I took a shower and watched a movie until I was tired again and returned to bed at about 7 AM. I had cereal after my shower so I was not very hungry upon waking up but my throat was hurting and so I had some EmergenC…that came back up within a half hour of drinking it. By mid-morning I had hives/welts all over my legs, groin, underarms, head, & hands and I felt like I had gotten hit by a bus! I had so many hives on my groin area that they all joined together to make one huge itchy and painful welt. I was UNCOMFORTABLE…to say the least.
Peppermint Oil has helped to take away my hives/welts in about half the time but aside from bathing in it, I did not have enough oil to cover my whole body. Emilio suggested taking a bath and putting some drops in the bath and I remembered someone saying to soak Epsom Salts with oils. I ended up using 10-15 drops of Basil, 5 drops of Frankincense, and 5-10 drops of Melaleuca in Epsom Salts. The bath calmed the itching down for a while but I still felt like I had gotten run over my a steam roller. Upon getting out of the bath and returning to the living room I got sick and threw up the apple juice that I had before my bath. I kept down the toast and chicken noodle soup that I had earlier but did not keep down that apple juice (even though it tasted like Orange Juice coming back up).
I felt very hot and finally took my temperature, only to realize that it was 100° F. My head felt like it was on fire and I would zone out several times while sitting in the chair. That night I did a Google search for how high my temperature should get before going to the hospital and I found that anything above 100.4° F is a fever and can be very bad for baby. My hives/welts had spread to my stomach and boobs and my fever did not seem to be coming down anytime soon so my mom suggested putting rubbing alcohol on the inside of my wrists to bring the fever down. Within about an hour of doing this I felt my temperature drop and I was feeling much better…not back to normal…but better.
The next morning I had no new welts and I did not have a fever…sickness gone! I did still have a sore throat so Emilio got me some AlkaSeltzer Daytime Cold & Flu and a Carmel Apple from the local candy store (because they are in season and I saw that they had them from a picture on Facebook).
Overall, I’m feeling much better then I was this week! It’s Sunday and I have a bit of a headache but nothing too intense. I tried to break in some new tennis shoes yesterday and got welts on my feet so my they are a bit swollen still as well. Otherwise I am doing pretty well and I am hanging in there. I just hope things get better in the next trimester!
We had another doctor’s appointment on Monday and we got to hear the baby’s heartbeat! The midwife wants me to see an allergist again about my urticaria and has put a referral in for me. I’ll see the allergist towards the end of October…hopefully they can tell me what is causing all these welts!
On Wednesday we headed to Salt Lake City for Comic Con. Emilio has always wanted to go to Comic Con and we finally made it to one! It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed seeing all the costumes. It was a lot bigger than I expected, which made for long lines and fighting through crowds, but it was still pretty awesome. By Saturday I was completely worn out and only made it about 1 hour before my feet started to swell and I had to find a place to rest. We made it to Sebastian Stan’s panel (Bucky in Captain America) but sadly did not get to see Chris Evans (Captain America), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), or Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter). Their panel was Saturday morning as the convention opened and I knew there was no way we would make it unless we started to wait in line at 7 AM (which none of us wanted to do).
Our trip was a bunch of fun and we had a great time seeing some friends! We took a bunch of pictures that I will post soon!
This week has been a hectic one! After getting back from Salt Lake City late Sunday night, we started working on our entertainment center first thing Monday morning. We’ve been waiting to be home to finish it and we are now about 90% done! We only have 1 shelf to cut and some shelves to finish painting and it will be completely finished!
My body has definitely been worn out this week from working on the entertainment center but I’ve finally gotten a day off today and I feel rejuvenated again. It’s amazing what a day off can do! This week we bought some golden books for the baby at Bi-Mart. As Emilio was looking at the books, I spotted an ADORABLE moo-cow (Holstein cow) baby toy and I just had to get it! We also found some baby shoes at Target for the official announcement and we also got a new 55″ Sony TV (the TV isn’t really for baby…but it’s exciting)!
Besides being worn out, I actually feel a lot better. I’ve only gotten a few welts on my hands this week (nowhere else) and I don’t feel quite so tired during the day. My lower back has been hurting really bad off and on all week. It hurts in the middle of my right side, right on the top of my pelvis. It almost feels like it’s hurting where my muscles attach to the pelvis. I’m hoping I can go to the chiropractor this week to fix it, but if that doesn’t work I’m going to have to talk Emilio into rubbing my back every day! 😉
I’m already having a harder time getting up off the couch and getting out of the car. I can’t imagine how the next several months are going to be…
There you have it! That’s the nitty gritty detail of my first trimester! All in all, I feel that I had a pretty good first trimester. I didn’t have morning sickness, I slept a lot, I loved Chow Mein, and I hated Pizza! We had our first ultrasound and I had terrible gas at night! I made 2 trips to Washington and we went to Salt Lake Comic Con and Emilio & I bought our baby’s first clothes (2 Seahawks onesies). I hope the second trimester goes just as well, if not better!
